We are pleased to offer a selection ofthese extremely rare, hand colored butterfly engravings from the fist edition of Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres d’Europe 1834, by H. P. Lucas, drawn from nature by A. Noel. This edition depicts almost 400 different butterflies on 80 plates.
Hippolyte Pierre Lucas (1814-1899) started work as an apprentice in the Zoological department of the Paris Museum of Natural History at the age of thirteen and wrote this work at the age of 20. He also completed another equally beautiful work on exotic butterflies during this time.
