The hand-colored copperplate engravings below are cut from William MacGillivray's (1796-1851) classic Edinburgh Journal of Natural History and of the Physical Sciences, edited by Smith, Elder, & Co. and published by Edinburgh Printing Co., 1835-1839. After studying medicine at King's College, Aberdeen, William MacGillivray became curator of the Museum of the Royal Colledge of Surgeons in Edinburgh and later became professor of natural history at Marischal College, Aberdeen. MacGillivray was a friend of John James Audubon and composed parts of Audubons' Ornithological Biographies.
The engravings below resemble those in Jardine's Natural History but are much larger. The paper is toned a pleasing ivory color. A few plates show evidence of wear consistent with normal handling, especially in the lower right corner.
Size: 9 x 13 inches.
